Councilmember Tretheway Announces Passage of Flood Control Assessment

SACRAMENTO- Councilmember Ray Tretheway, a member of the Sacramento Area Flood Control District (SAFCA) Board of Directors, announced today that the local flood assessment passed, receiving an astonishing 81.2% of the vote. The assessment will generate $326 million over the next 30 years to improve Sacramento levees that will protect homes, businesses, schools, hospitals, and vital transportation and public safety resources in the event of a major flood. In addition, the money generated from the assessment is essential in order to receive both state and federal funds for levee improvements in the Sacramento area.

“Once again, Sacramento voters sent a clear message that we are willing to step up and do what we need to do to protect our homes and businesses,” said Tretheway. “Now we can begin improving our levees and work with our state and federal partners to bring Sacramento to 200 year flood protection.”

Combined with federal and state funds, the Army Corps of Engineers will begin work on the following projects:

· $1.6 billion to improve Folsom Dam
· $160 million to improve the levees along the American River
· $340 million for levee improvements along the Sacramento River
· $414 million to improve levees in Natomas.
